Haags Verhaal
Ukrainian flag guard meets Moluccan flag bearer
17:30 Walk-in with soup and bread
18:15 Start of the stories
20:30 End of the meeting
Storytelling Evening on the Power of the Flag, Injustice, and Resistance
In this edition of Haags Verhaal (The Hague Story), two groups with completely different backgrounds come together to share stories about the power of their flag, injustice, and resistance: Maluku The Hague meets the ‘Ukrainian’ vlaggenwacht (flag guard).
Frans van der Grint from Flag Guard The Hague is one of the driving forces behind the twenty-meter-wide Ukrainian flag that hangs in front of the Russian embassy every day. Together with a friend, he started this action shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine — a protest against war and a call for peace. The flag is still raised and guarded daily by a small group of volunteer flag keepers. Frans will tell us more about the Vlaggenwacht Den Haag and his commitment.
Accordionist Eduard Becker is involved with the Flag Guard and often plays Ukrainian songs in front of the Russian embassy as a form of protest. He will perform several of these songs during the evening.
Chiara Houtman from Maluku The Hague will speak about what the flag of the Republic of South Maluku means to her. The flag was first raised on April 25, 1950, when the Republic of South Maluku was declared, and it symbolizes the Moluccan struggle for independence. Chiara will share insights into Moluccan history and current issues, and how these are personally meaningful to her.
Haags Verhaal connects communities who do not yet know each other but have something in common, through stories and images. For more information about the evening: mail@haagsverhaal.nl.
