West presents the one-time installation тіло (Tilo, ‘body’), a powerful sound work by Lotte Geeven, based on the heartbeats of soldiers on the Ukrainian front. Geeven has transformed these recordings into an evocative soundscape that makes the impact of war tangible. This unique listening session is exclusively available during Hoogtij on Friday, November 29, 2024, between 7:00 PM and 11:00 PM.
The presses are running, poets are writing, authors are crafting, and makers are creating. Together, they shape a hauntingly detailed testimony of the war’s impact on the soul of a nation. Geeven, who recorded the heartbeats along the 1,000-kilometer front with the help of a translator, sees these recordings not only as part of a musical composition but also as a historical document capturing a nation at war.
The original ‘raw recordings’ can be experienced in an intimate listening session at West Den Haag (in the former American embassy). The heartbeats resonate from the basement, at frequencies so low that they are not only heard but felt. Below 20 hertz, sound transforms into a physical sensation.
The recordings feature contributions from a diverse group of men and women—young and old, from all walks of life. Among them are a former icon painter, television presenter, masseur, boxer, farmer, welder, chef, businessman, fisherman, teacher, construction worker, engineer, police officer, and many others. Now serving as soldiers, lieutenants, generals, or officers on the front lines, they are uprooted from their previous lives and confronted with new, often uncomfortable identities as they strive to remain human amidst the madness of war.
In early 2025, this recording will be added as an artifact to the collection of the War Museum in Kyiv. Nestled among war debris and heavy equipment, this intimate document will shed light on the human side of war for future generations.
On this special evening, Geeven’s work will be presented alongside an acoustic composition by Dmytro Avksentiev (Koloah), assembled from field recordings of the front-line ecosystem in Ukraine. These recordings, created with the support of the Ukrainian defense forces, capture the raw soundscape of the war zone.

Lotte Geeven creates monumental recordings of phenomena that exist beyond our daily perception. She often collaborates with scientists to develop technologies and methods that allow us to listen to a world we have yet to discover. Her work is driven by exploration, collectivity, and engagement. It has been exhibited in prominent collections, including Museum Voorlinden (NL), Taubert Contemporary Berlin (DE), Point B New York (USA), and The British Museum (UK).
